One of the shelters in Highland Park, 950 Warren Street, Mankato.

The playground equipment in Highland Park, 950 Warren Street, is scheduled for replacement because of its age, condition and challenges in finding replacement parts. Playground equipment options are designed to meet safety requirements and provide opportunities aligned with American Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. The installation of a new playground unit in Highland Park was identified in Mankato’s Community Investment Plan as part of the parks capital replacement fund.

The community is asked to vote on favorite playground equipment design and preferred location to place fitness equipment.

Option one features:

  • Single mega tower, three large slides and multiple side slides
  • Small net climber
  • Gravity rail

Option two features:

  • Two towers connected by a skyway with climbing rings
  • One large slide and multiple side slides
  • Large net climber

A State of Minnesota grant, which requires a fitness option, will fund a portion of project costs. An outdoor fitness course includes a series of physical obstacles with three challenge levels and multiple options within each level. The system promotes health and wellness in a city park; helps make it easy for everyone to engage in fitness; gives people an opportunity to be active at no cost and is available at their convenience.

Other park work includes adding an asphalt trail from existing trail to restroom, improvement of shelters one, two and restroom, concrete curbing to create a finished edge and volleyball net replacement. Proposed work is expected to begin summer 2020.

Note: This is the same survey provided in paper form to residents who voted as part of recent Night to Unite event.

Estimated costs:

  • playground equipment: $186,000
  • fitness equipment: $65,000
