The City of Mankato is piloting Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs) at select signalized intersections to help make crossing the street safer and more visible for pedestrians.

What is a Leading Pedestrian Interval?

LPIs give pedestrians a 3-7 second head start to enter a marked crosswalk before vehicles receive a green light.

This means pedestrians can begin crossing while turning vehicles are still stopped. The extra time helps pedestrians establish their presence in the crosswalk before vehicles are allowed to turn.

Why are we using LPIs?

LPIs are one tool the City of Mankato is using to improve safety and accessibility for everyone using our streets.

LPIs can help:

  • Make pedestrians more visible to drivers
  • Reduce conflicts between pedestrians and turning vehicles
  • Increase the likelihood that drivers yield to pedestrians
  • Give people who need more time to start crossing a safer opportunity

LPIs were installed at 14 signalized intersections, prioritizing schools and the downtown area. These locations represent approximately 25% of the City's signalized intersections.

See a Signal Issue? Let Us Know.

LPIs are designed to improve the pedestrian experience, but the signals themselves also need to work as intended.

If you notice something that doesn't seem right such as a pedestrian push button that isn't working, a pedestrian signal display that is difficult to see, or another issue with a traffic signal, report it to 311.
