The City of Mankato is continuing its multi-phase plan to improve infrastructure in the Long Street neighborhood. This fourth phase focuses on replacing aging underground utilities—specifically the watermain, sanitary sewer, and stormwater systems.

The neighborhood, generally located between Dickinson Street and Victory Drive and from Main Street to Fair Street, has infrastructure dating back to the mid-1950s. The watermain is made of cast iron which has resulted in frequent watermain breaks.

The sanitary sewer system is also original and made of clay, which is vulnerable to leaks and root intrusion as it ages.

As part of this project, sidewalks identified in the City’s Critical Link Sidewalk Plan may also be added or improved to enhance walkability and safety for residents.

Reconstruction will occur in multiple phases to manage costs and minimize disruption, with this phase being the next step in modernizing essential infrastructure and improving overall quality of life in the Long Street neighborhood.

The existing asphalt pavement on Main Street from Hannah Street to Victory Drive is in poor condition with fatigue cracking and pot holes present throughout. The utilities beneath the roadway were installed around the year 2000 and are constructed of modern materials. A resurfacing project will extend the useful life of the roadway and create a safe driving surface for the public. The scope of work is proposed as a full depth reclamation, ADA sidewalk improvements, spot curb & gutter replacement, and possible isolated storm drainage improvements. The project also includes reconstructing the access road to the City's Dolph Reservoir, located on the Minnesota State University Mankato campus at 710 Maywood Avenue.

Funding will come from a combination of local and state sources:

The City of Mankato is moving forward with the reconstruction of several streets in the Germania Park neighborhood, including:

• 2nd Avenue (from Maxfield Street to Pine Street)

• Maxfield Street (from 1st Avenue to 3rd Avenue)

• Chestnut Street (from 1st Avenue to 3rd Avenue)

This work is part of a broader plan to improve infrastructure in the Germania Park area, which is generally located between Riverfront Drive, 1st Avenue, Highway 14, and the Minnesota River. Much of the underground infrastructure in this neighborhood is 50 to 75 years old and needs replacement.

Due to the area’s unique bedrock foundation, development has been limited, and many of the water and sewer systems still rely on original materials that are outdated and prone to failure. For example, the existing sewer pipes are likely made of clay, which can crack and allow tree roots and groundwater to enter. These will be replaced with more durable PVC pipes. The aging cast iron watermain will also be replaced with a larger, more reliable pipe that meets today’s standards.

These improvements were originally planned several years ago as part of a master plan developed in 2011, but funding delays postponed the work.
